From the President

August 2016

Dear PGGNE Members and Friends:

What a joy to be in touch with you over the summer to preview the exciting and progressive ways that PGGNE continues to move forward. Here are a few updates from the Board Retreat that I'd like share with you.

Moving Towards Financial Sustainability
Financial Sustainability has been a top priority for the Board. The simple fact remains that in recent years, PGGNE has had to draw on its reserve fund to subsidize meeting costs, and increasingly lean on the benevolence of sponsorships to meet meeting expenses. Last Spring, it was shared with the membership that the cost of the monthly programs continues to be subsidized by PGGNE, even though big steps were taken to reduce meeting expenses by holding two webinars and moving the meeting space. Discussing how best to maintain the bottom line led to the question, how are other councils handing this issue? As a result, the Board was led to conduct a research analysis for membership and meeting expenses. We thought the findings were so interesting, and wanted you to have this information too. Check out the charts below. For more detail visit our comparison data page.

As a first step towards financial sustainability, while maintaining consistent and current practices within our industry, the Board has elected to institute a fee for the All-Day Conference. By charging a fee, PGGNE can replenish the funds in the reserves that were used to subsidize meeting costs, and establish a path to cover meeting expenses. We hope that you'll agree that instituting a conference fee is a sound decision made by the Board.

Change of Month for the All-Day Conference
You asked, and we listened. Over the years, it's been said time and again that May is a crowded month, especially for our colleagues in education. This year, the Board unanimously voted to hold the All-Day Conference to April. Yes, that's April. Rest assured there will still be a May meeting, however, May's will follow the format of the regular monthly meeting.

The President's Council - Is it for me? What is it?
Yes, it's all about You! PGGNE is delighted to share with you a new and exciting volunteer opportunity. The President's Council has been designed to give you an opportunity to work with the Board on areas ranging from membership, conference planning, and strategic opportunities without the time commitment of a Board member. It's one way for you to share your voice, gain an insight into work of the Board, and even entertain the possibility of serving on the Board.
