Issue: January 2015

Share the Experience!

Start off the New Year with friends, bring a colleague or board member to the next meeting. Show them why being a member of PGGNE is an investment worth making.

Job Postings

Even if you are not “in the market,” perhaps you know someone who is, or who might not be aware of this particular service that we offer our members and advertisers. What could be more satisfying than to bring together two parties in a win-win situation? Go to the Career Center on the new website for all the information you need.

Save the Date!

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

Please mark your calendars and make sure to bring a friend to the  All-Day Conference.

Who's Wearing Blue Stripes?

Maybe it's you or someone you encouraged to join. At our meetings new members' name tags have a blue stripe, so please take time to welcome and introduce yourself to your newest colleagues.

Snow Policy

It's been a mild winter so far, but who knows what the new year will bring. It is New England after all! PGGNE meetings may be cancelled if the mayor or governor has declared a state of emergency in Boston. If the meeting is cancelled an alert will be posted on the website and the PGGNE office will record a voice mail message (at 781-647-4343, press *300) by 8:00 AM on the day of the meeting..

From the President

Dear PGGNE Members and Friends,

Wow, December's luncheon speaker, Michele Gravelle of Triad Consulting, gave a powerful lesson on handling difficult conversations. I think her presentation was my favorite so far this year - not that every other program didn't offer valuable lessons. In our business we have to know how to handle difficult conversations, and with so much practice I thought I had that well in hand. Now I have new strategies that will be incredibly useful.

What was your favorite PGGNE session so far this year? Or of all time? My all time favorite was the first Jonathon Tidd annual PG Quiz I ever attended. I was sitting at a table with a wide range of planned giving professionals. As Jonathon posed his questions and offered detailed answers, I got as many answers wrong as everyone else at the table. I knew I would fit right in! We are so fortunate to have Jonathon with us again this April, ready to stump us again I'm sure.

If you have not yet signed up for the January meeting, you should consider doing so right away. We have another stellar line up. The basics session at 11:00 will be "The ABC's of Life Income Gifts" with Ellen Estes, from Estes Associates. Ellen will review the most common types of Life Income Gifts and how they work, and will also explore what assets are most appropriate for funding these gifts. The Nuts and Bolts presentation at 11:00 will be "Tax and Legislative Updates" with Suma Nair, from Goulston & Storrs. Suma will discuss current legislative proposals and how they could affect estate and charitable planning. The luncheon presentation on "Donor Advised Funds" will be given by Charlie Glassenberg, of Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Charlie will present the biggest issues and opportunities for both donors charities.

In addition, if you or someone you know is looking for an introductory session that covers the basics of planned giving - or a refresher on the various planned giving strategies and how to talk about them with donors - then PGGNE's Fundamentals program is for you! This is a one day intensive that has been a sold out program for the past 3 years. This year’s Fundamentals program will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, MA. Details and registration will soon be available at

Finally, mark your calendars now for the PGGNE All-Day Conference on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. I look forward to learning with you.

Arlene M. Holtzman

Did you Miss the Last Monthly Meeting?

The December 3, 2014 sessions started with our regularly scheduled “meet and greet” networking opportunity for all members. PGGNE's own Arlene Holtzman shared her knowledge of "Women in Philanthropy at the Basics session, while Aviva Selling shared "Five Investment Lessons" in the Nuts & Bolts session. There were 146 attendees at the luncheon where speaker Michele Gravelle brought the definition of audience participation to a whole new level (you had to be there to know what we mean).

Membership Directories

Hard copy Membership Directories will be distributed at the January 7 meeting. Please make sure to pick yours up and support PGGNE by picking your colleague's up as well. A directory picked up means one that does not have to be mailed.

As always, an online directory is available at our website.

Programming News

We continue to work to secure talented speakers who will appeal to our membership. The schedule, program descriptions and speaker biographies can be found under the Programs tab on our website at In each newsletter we provide a snapshot of the upcoming two months.

Remember in an effort to “Go Green” we ask that you print the handouts (if available) in advance from the websit
