From the President

Dear PGGNE Members and Friends,

I am very pleased to be at the helm for the launch of our new and much improved PGGNE website. But there has been a long and lustrous past to this transformation. Our past president, Charlie Gordy, made it his mission to update and streamline our on-line presence. Carlos Byrne, our communications chair, took the lead in researching and evaluating the myriad of service providers to find the best match. The entire Board and our administrative guru extraordinaire, Beth Battson, were all involved in making the many decisions needed and taking the action steps necessary to provide this resource to the membership. Thank you to all!

Please join us on Wednesday November 12th for presentations on a topic near and dear to all gift planners - tax law. We have found ways to take this complex topic and make it accessible. Our basics track session will be led by Anne Katsas of Port Estate Planning, LLC presenting "Tax 101: Basics of Transfer Tax and Income Tax." The Nuts and Bolts session on Generation Skipping Tax will be presented by Nancy Dempze from the law firm of Hemenway & Barnes. Our luncheon speaker Brad Bedingfield, from Goulston & Storrs, will discuss Gifts and Bequests by Non-U.S. Donors. You can always count on PGGNE to provide the latest and most focused treatment on the topics that matter in philanthropy. As always, we will start the morning with a Networking Coffee hour starting at 10:00am.

At the conclusion of a recent planned giving presentation, I asked two of the donor attendees if the session was helpful. Both responded that the session was interesting and thought provoking, but they now had more questions than when they came. I suggested they meet with the PG staff to ask their particular questions and bounce ideas around.

While the opportunity had been offered at the outset of the session, what they had heard was "when you are ready to make a gift, call us". They both wanted to discuss their plans with someone, and after I suggested it directly, they were both eager to set up a strategy session. As planned giving professionals, we need to be available, and to encourage our donors to use our expertise for brainstorming sessions, not just gift conversations. I am positive that finding the time to initiate and participate in those early conversations, invariably results in not only a gift to your organization, but a bigger gift than would have otherwise been made. Being in the audience of this session made it clear to me that planned giving experts are doing the donors a favor reaching out to them - so go pick up the phone!

Did you Miss the Last Monthly Meeting?

The October 8, 2014 sessions started with a mentor/mentee “meet and greet” as well as a general networking opportunity for all members. Carmen Tordiglione and Rosa Mayorga delivered a very well received Basics program on ”The 5 W’s of Legacy Societies”, while Jacob Norlock showed us what really works when it comes to “Planned Giving Marketing Online” in the Nuts & Bolts session. Approximately 159 people attended the luncheon where speaker Karyl Levinson educated the audience on “Marketing Trends”.
