Real Estate Gifts: Ten Trends

Dennis Bidwell, Bidwell Advisors

Download Handout

For a host of reasons, more and more development professionals are turning their attention to the single largest asset category for many of their donors, their real estate holdings.  Based on over twenty years of helping non-profits of all sizes and shapes attract, structure, evaluate and close gifts of real estate, Dennis Bidwell has gathered a great deal of evidence about what works, and what doesn’t work, when it comes to real estate gifts.  This anecdotal evidence has been supplemented with regional and national surveys he has conducted of development staff involved in one aspect or another of real estate giving.

This presentation will highlight ten trends Dennis has observed in recent years.  His presentation will include what he is seeing regarding gift acceptance policies for real estate, marketing and outreach, gift officer training for real estate gifts, the role of board members, real estate in capital campaigns, increased use of real estate-funded charitable gift annuities and retained life estates, and working with conservation-minded property owners.

Legislative Update on Tax Reform and Potential Impact to Charitable Giving

Michael Kenyon, President and CEO, National Association of Charitable Gift Planners

Download Presentation

Tax reform is now a primary focus of Congress. With less than 30 legislative calendar days before the end of the year legislation could move very quickly. Provisions in the current tax reform proposals that impact charitable giving will be discussed as well as legislation introduced to offset or expand charitable giving.
