Building Effective Philanthropic Partnerships

Ron Schiller, Aspen Leadership Group

Rebecca Tseng Smith, University of California San Diego

Drawing on the ideas proposed in the recently-released book, Raising Your Institution's Largest Gifts: A Principal Gifts Handbook, and on two decades of observations from CASE's Inspiring the Largest Gifts of a Lifetime conference, Ronald J. Schiller and Rebecca Tseng Smith will discuss what today's top donors are saying about their largest gifts and what our organizations need to do to secure those gifts. We will discuss the elements of a culture that supports effective principal gift philanthropy in today's fundraising environment, including the roles of organizational representatives in building the types of philanthropic partnerships that lead to transformational gifts.

About the Speakers

Ron Schiller, Aspen Leadership Group

Founding Partner of the Aspen Leadership Group and the Philanthropy Career Network, Ron Schiller is a nationally recognized advisor to nonprofit leaders. Ron held leadership positions in seven educational and cultural institutions, including the University of Chicago, where he led a team of 450 that completed a $2.3 billion campaign and facilitated two nine-figure gifts.

He is the author of three books: The Chief Development Officer: Beyond Fundraising, published by Rowman & Littlefield, and Belief and Confidence: Donors Talk About Successful Philanthropic Partnership and Raising Your Organization’s Largest Gifts: A Principal Gifts Handbook, both published by CASE.

Rebecca Tseng Smith, University of California San Diego

Rebecca Tseng Smith is a member of the leadership team in university development at UC San Diego. Prior to arriving in La Jolla, she enjoyed a long career in development serving the University of Hawai’i Foundation, Stanford University, Harvard University and Cornell University. The subject that has most interested her in her work is philanthropic motivation; what motivates individuals to make very generous gifts and how can we shape our institutions and practices to inspire and accept this generosity?

She chairs CASE’s long-standing conference on this subject “Inspiring the Largest Gifts of a Lifetime.” Rebecca earned a bachelor's degree in English literature at Boston University and a master's degree in theology at BU’s School of Theology where she serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board. She loves to read, travel and hike.
