Tips & Best Practices

Please share your planned giving tips and best practices with the PGGNE membership. To contribute a tip, please email the PGGNE office at info@pggne.org.

From the President

Dear PGGNE Members and Friends,

I met with a philanthropist recently who told me that he advises all his friends and acquaintances who give more than $1000 a year to set up a fund. Most of his friends have no giving strategy. They write checks to many different organizations. Some are very small gifts and others quite significant. They give cash although they have appreciated stock. They scramble at tax time to gather all their receipts, not realizing they could set up a gift fund or a donor advised fund, make one gift, have one receipt, and then give to their charitable interests from that fund. I am adopting this recommendation. While I have focused for many years on substantial gifts from sophisticated donors, it is sometimes the simplest advice that garners trust and confidence, which is always the first step in closing a significant gift. What is the first step in being more strategic for donors who are not at all strategic?

Don't forget, we are meeting on the FIRST Wednesday in December rather than our usual second Wednesday of the month. I hope you will attend my basics presentation on Women in Philanthropy: Considering Their Needs. Of course, you may be more inclined to attend our Nuts and Bolts session with Aviva Selling of Kaspick & Company presenting on Investment Perspectives: Five Investment Lessons for the Long Term. The luncheon presentation will be Michele Gravelle of Triad Consulting on Negotiating Difficult Conversations.

I'd like to give a special Thank You to Pentera for their generous sponsorship of this month's meeting. We rely on our sponsors to support the programming and services of PGGNE. You will see our sponsors scrolling across the bottom the PGGNE.org home page and on the Sponsorship link. Our nine sponsors so far this year, in various capacities include: BNY Mellon, CCS, Crescendo, Deerfield Associates, Estes Associates, Hemenway & Barnes, Kaspick & Company, State Street Global Advisors, and of course, Pentera.

With the winter upon us, it is that time for frantic calls of last minute planning before the end of the year. I hope you have many! It is still a good sign to be so busy at year end.

Did you Miss the Last Monthly Meeting?

The November 12, 2014 sessions started with our regularly scheduled “meet and greet” networking opportunity for all members. Anne Katsas explained ”Tax 101: Basics of Transfer Tax and Income Tax” to a standing room only Basics audience, while Nancy Dempze and Charlie Platt deepened our understanding of GST in the Nuts & Bolts session. There were 148 attendees at the luncheon where speaker Brad Bedingfield brought the audience up to speed on “Gifts and Bequests by Non-US Donors”.
